Baka Live $15.98 In 2006, seven Baka Pygmy musicians made a historic visit to the UK to tour with Baka Beyond. For most of them it was their first journey outside their rainforest home and for all of them their first trip outside Africa. Their remarkable performances were captured on a digital multitrack and here is the record of this unique tour. A decade ago, Martin & Su Cradick set off for the Cameroon rain forest and brought back exquisite recordings of the music of the Baka people (The Heart of the Forest). Musicians from 6 countries in the Celtic fringes of Europe and the West coast of Africa join together to play the most original live world fusion sound around. The spirit of the music lives in the rhythm. Performers: Kibisingo Douglas – Bass; Lekeweh Marceline – Vocals; Lessa “Zow” Romain – Guitar; Martin Cradick – Mandolin, Guitar; Mbeh Prosper – Guitar; Paddy le Mercier – Whistle (Human), Violin; Pelembir Dieudonné – Vocals, Drums; Seckou Keita – Percussion; Su Hart – Vocals; Tim Robinson – Drums, Percussion; Ybunga Marie – Vocals |

Update $15.18 By necessity, jazz trombonists tend to be inspired by music of the early jazz and swing eras, because the instrument lost favor around the time bop became ascendant and all young jazz fans wanted to become either Charlie Parker or Miles Davis. Massachusetts-born, New York-based trombonist Steve Davis bucks that trend, however: he’s a post-bop player all the way, down to covering Jackie McLean’s Parker tribute, “Bird Lives.” (Guest trumpeter Roy Hargrove contributes an outstanding, fluid solo on this track as well.) Update is a small-combo date featuring Davis and Hargrove in front of a four-piece rhythm section, with a song selection featuring two by Wayne Shorter, a lovely rendition of Billy Strayhorn’s underappreciated gem “Daydream,” and a cool, Miles-like take on Ray Drummond’s little-known composition “Leanin’ and Preenin’” that shows off a killer walking bassline by Nat Reeves. Unexpected song choices, smart arrangements, and Davis’ excellent, understated playing make Update one of Davis’ strongest albums as a leader. ~ Stewart Mason, Rovi Performers: Roy Hargrove – Flugelhorn, Trumpet; Anthony Wonsey – Piano; Joe Farnsworth – Drums; Nat Reeves – Bass; Peter Bernstein – Guitar; Steve Davis – Trombone |

Pretty Little Baka Guy [Oglio] $7.98 Anyone doubting the authenticity of Shonen Knife as legit alternative rockers should direct their attentions to this title, which couples their 1986 Pretty Little Baka Guy LP with bonus live versions of two of the LP’s tracks, “Riding on the Rocket” and “Kappa Ex.” The ten studio sides perfectly demonstrate the band’s quirky, if not terminally catchy, approach to crafting pop melodies. Their grunge-inspired instrumentation and D.I.Y. execution give the material a rough and edgy quality. Lyrically, the Knife are all over the place, ranging from the ecological concerns of “Making Plans for Bison” to the confessions of a sweet-tooth on “I Wanna Eat Chocobars” and the fun little romp on “Ice Cream City.” The angular and trippy “Public Bath” extols the virtues of the decidedly Eastern tradition of public bathing facilities in a manner that only they can pull off. As for the live tracks, what they lack in fidelity is more than compensated for in sheer inspiration. This is a recommended find for any and all prospective parties, and has been reissued on CD several times since initially surfacing in 1991 on the indie Rockville Records label in a version that, incidentally, included eight live tracks rather than two. ~ Lindsay Planer, Rovi Performers: Atsuko Yamano – Vocals (Background), Drums; Ichiya Nakamura – Guitar; Michie Nakatani – Bass, Vocals, Guitar (Bass); Naoko Yamano – Vocals, Guitar |

Music Update $12.78 Throughout much of Jason Marsalis’ career, the word “drummer” has appeared in front of his name. But Marsalis doesn’t play the drums at all on Music Update, his third album as a leader; this 2009 release finds him playing the vibes exclusively. Some people familiar with Marsalis from his two previous albums (Year of the Drummer and Music in Motion) might not even know that he plays the vibes, but in fact, he has been making them a high priority since the early 2000s — and as a vibist, Marsalis has an attractive sound that is somewhere between Milt Jackson and Lionel Hampton. Marsalis even pays tribute to Hampton on “Midnight Sun” (his most famous song) and Charlie Christian’s “Seven Come Eleven,” although most of the songs on this 54-minute CD are original compositions. Music Update is essentially hard bop with elements of swing, and there are hints of New Orleans music (including Crescent City blues and Crescent City gospel) on Marsalis originals such as “Western Vacation Ranch,” “Ballet Class,” “Characters,” and “Blues for the 29%ers (Down to 19).” The interesting thing is that even though Marsalis — who forms an acoustic quartet with pianist Austin Johnson, bassist Will Goble, and drummer David Potter — plays the vibes exclusively on Music Update, his drummer bias still comes through. Marsalis features Potter prominently, especially on “Guess Who’s Back?,” “Discipline Vacations in Asia” (which combines jazz drumming with Japanese taiko drumming), and the funky “Discipline Spotted Baby and Zutty at Studio 54.” Music Update is certainly a pleasant surprise; back in the 1990s, who would have thought that Wynton, Branford, and Delfeayo’s younger brother would end up playing nothing but vibes on one of his albums? But Marsalis has clearly mastered the vibes, and his third album is excellent. ~ Alex Henderson, Rovi Performers: Jason Marsalis – Vibraphone; Austin Croom Johnson – Piano; Austin Johnson – Piano; Dave Potter – Drums; David Potter – Drums; Will Goble – Bass |
